Americans are busier than ever – but one must not confuse busyness with productivity.
We all have that one friend who claims she is “SO BUSY!” but yet always seems to be scrambling to meet deadlines and late for every appointment.
So if you’ve got a pretty busy schedule and are looking for a few simple hacks to simplify your life and make you more productive – we’ve got some tips to help you stay on the grind without burning out.
Create A Daily Schedule – And Stick To It
Productive people have a plan.
They don’t roll out of bed at 9am and ask “So what am I going to do today”?
Creating a block schedule and grouping like tasks together is a smart way to organize your day.
Have a set morning routine, where you gather your thoughts for the day, meditate, read Scripture, and eat a healthy breakfast.
Then schedule your day accordingly focusing on what you actually need to accomplish.
If you have a block scheduled to check emails – then just do that. Stay focused and you’ll be amazed at how your day begins to flow.
You can even get creative and make your block schedule color-coordinated and use paint sample cards to make a bright and cheerful homemade calendar to hang on your wall – or do it digitally with something like Google Tasks.
David Allen is a time management guru and has long recommended his followers to implement the “two-minute rule.”
This simple rule is just like it sounds – if something can be done in two minutes – do it then.
Success Magazine reported his strategy behind the rule :
“I have a two minute rule that says: If you determine an action can be done in two minutes, you actually should do it right then because it’ll take longer to organize it and review it than it would be to actually finish it the first time you notice it”.
And it’s true.
If you have an email you can reply to real quick – but you delay it and take the time to file it or write it down on your to-do list – you could end up spending more time “organizing it” than just doing it!
Take Time To Rest
This might seem counterintuitive, but taking time to rest can actually make you more productive!
Studies show employees who work more than 50 hours a week aren’t even as productive as the quality of their work starts to decline.
And when employees are overworked and stressed – they can begin to burnout and call off work – which creates a vicious cycle that is hard to bounce back from.
Instead, by working reasonable hours and taking time to unplug when away from the office, your brain can remain fresh and less tired.
And don’t be afraid to take a mental health day when you need it!
Especially after just crushing it through a major deadline or work project!
