Summertime is time for road trips, vacations, and being on the road.
While traveling is one of the most important things you can do in your life, it’s hard to maintain healthy habits at the same time.
Here’s how to be healthy while you’re on the road:
1) Whether you are flying or driving, pack as many healthy snacks as possible.
We’ve all been there—starving, with no other options besides the greasiest of fast food or that semi-sketchy gas station with snacks that seem like they expired in the ‘70s. To avoid caving and eating that sketchy Snickers bar…
The best snacks to pack while traveling are:
-Granola bars
-Dried fruit, apples, grapes
-Trail mix (pick the healthy kind—not the one with M&Ms)
-Crackers or kettle chips
-Air popped popcorn
-Pretzels and hummus
-Carrot sticks and peanut butter packs
2) Or take it one step further and pack your meals for the trip.
Do you know if you’ll be in the car all day? Then plan ahead and pack a lunch and dinner.
Salads with the dressing on the side, sandwiches, wraps, veggies and hummus, or fruit and yogurt are all good options for meals on the road.
3) Remember to get in your exercise where you can!
The best part of a long car ride is being able to take breaks and stretch it out—but what if you took that break to exercise?
On your breaks, do 15 lunges, yoga poses for one minute each, or go for a quick jog around the parking lot. Don’t worry about being judged—everyone will be jealous of your physical health.
4) When dining out, choose healthy options.
Instead of opting for that greasy burger and fries, try ordering a salad sans cheese and any other unhealthy options. The best places to grab a quick, healthy bite on the road are Panera, Chick-Fil-A, Subway, and Chipotle.
5) Remember to care for your skin!
Pack facial wipes to cleanse with sporadically, spray yourself with a facial toner when you’re feeling dry, and use chapstick or lip balm. When traveling, especially on an airplane, your skin gets very dry, and the climate across country or overseas is something your skin will absolutely have to get used to—skin care is essential.
6) DRINK WATER. DRINK WATER. DRINK WATER.
This one is self-explanatory, but drinking water is SO IMPORTANT. If you are dehydrated, you will lose focus which is incredibly dangerous on a long road trip.
These are just a few of the ways you can stay healthy while on the road. The most important things to keep in mind are staying hydrated and finding a balance with your eating habits. That being said, the most important part of traveling is to enjoy the destination—so don’t miss out on something just because you are worried about being healthy 100% of the time!
